‘The Reading List’ is a new, voluntary project by men to take up the challenge of reading one book a day with children for a month. A bag of books will be provided to the person who accepts the challenge.

When they complete it, their name will go on this site and they can then challenge other men they know to do the same.

This project has no spokesperson and no supporting logos - its power is shared equally amongst the men who challenge themselves and challenge others.

Our First Challenge

Recently the Reading List held its first challenge where four men of Alice Springs committed to reading a book a day for a month to a young child (or children).  This occasion marks the official launch of the project and puts in place the first group of men who will collectively own and drive the challenge.

But, we need more men of Alice Springs to get involved.

We need our men to challenge themselves and challenge others, and for our other family members and friends to spread the word and get more men involved.  Challenging each other can be easy, and we can show that there can be results in building the blocks of a lifelong education and the capabilities and choice that are the products of a strong education.  We don't need to constantly look at government or a grant provider or an official program for a solution - we can drive change ourselves.

Men can challenge themselves by visiting the Alice Springs Public Library and asking for a bag of books for 'the Reading List'.  The library will get your details.

Or, you can come to our next challenge which is on Thurs 15 December 2011 at the Public Library.  Turn up or email thereadinglist.central@gmail.com for more information.

the Reading List helping out at Braitling Primary School

In October the Reading List held a stall at Braitling Primary School's Treasure Your Reading event.  It was a chance to challenge men directly to be part of the first group and help spread the word.  Many pamphlets were handed out and families were asked to talk to men in their families and networks about the challenge.

Book donations and interest sought...

This project is still in development and we need your help...

Wanted – children books
We have a small amount of books to start the project, but need more. If you can donate second hand books (of all child ages) to the project than please deliver to the Alice Springs Public Library and say they are for ‘the Reading List’ project.

Wanted – men to be the first group challenged
This project is for all men (including those who already read daily to their children).  For the project to work we need men from all sections of Alice Springs.  If you want to be amongst the first group to be challenged, or know of someone and have talked to them (and they have agreed), please email thereadinglist.central@gmail.com (John Rawnsley will receive the email).
